The film is Lee’s second foray into international scene, after his summer blockbuster, ‘GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra’. It was released during the Pusan International Film Festival in October and also starred Japanese actor, Takuya Kimura. How’s the movie? An excerpt from a review by Variety;
Frequently incoherent and often repulsively violent drama, centered on an American private investigator on the trail of a wacko gone AWOL in the Far East, reps a career misstep by Hartnett in his first international production. Luckily for him, the English-lingo pic is virtually unreleasable in major western territories, except as a DVD curio
OK – that was little harsh. Although it has this to say about Lee and Harnett’s performance in ‘Rain’;
With the flashiest role, Lee steals the movie as the sadistic Su, though it’s a perf the South Korean thesp can almost phone in nowadays. Clean-cut Hartnett simply looks bemused [...]
Hollywood Reporter was kinder;
Though nearly two hours long, “Rain” never really drags, and Tran somehow manages to keep his religious imagery from dipping into histrionic. It may not be the subtlest of films from 2009, but it’s certainly one of the most aggressively ambient.
Right, Vogue. Harnett looks slightly bloated in this pictorial but Lee Byung Hyun? Smokin’.
